What’s the difference between a crown and a bridge?

While dental crowns and dental bridges are common treatments used to repair and restore teeth, they serve slightly different purposes.

Dental Crown

A dental crown is essentially a tooth cap that covers and strengthens a damaged, cracked or brittle tooth. A crown ultimately restores the tooth’s overall shape, appearance and strength. And it does so all while protecting it from further damage.

Crowns are commonly placed after root canal treatment, to cover large fillings or to reinforce a broken tooth. Our Maple Ridge dentists meticulously design dental crowns to match the colour and shape of your natural teeth before securely placing them.

Dental Bridge

A dental bridge seamlessly replaces one or more missing teeth next to each other. A dental bridge is one or more pontics (false teeth) held in place by crowns attached to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. It literally ‘bridges’ the space left behind by missing teeth and restores your ability to chew and speak comfortably.

To recap:

  • Crowns protect and restore damaged teeth.
  • Bridges replace missing teeth by anchoring to neighbouring teeth.
