At Maple Ridge Dental Centre, we like to keep our patients informed about their dental needs so they can make decisions at home that support excellent oral health. Knowing how and why a tooth cavity develops makes it easier to understand how to prevent one from occurring.
Plaque is the sticky film that coats your teeth and contains bacteria that feed on sugars and starches that linger on your teeth after eating. As bacteria consume sugar and starch, acid forms that remove minerals and open tiny holes in tooth enamel.
These “acid attacks” that repeatedly occur gradually wear away the hard outer layer of enamel and reach the softer layer beneath called dentin. Without treatment, the decay continues until it reaches the nerves deep inside your tooth and causes a toothache.
When treating a cavity, our dentists in Maple Ridge, BC remove the decay and then fill the tooth with a composite resin that’s coloured to match the shade of surrounding teeth.
How to Prevent Cavities
To help keep your teeth clean and your gums healthy, you should brush at least twice a day and floss once. In addition, professional teeth cleanings with a dental hygienist and exams with one of our dentists allow us to look for signs of tooth decay and provide prompt treatment.
If you are due for your next dental exam and teeth cleaning, please call Meadow Ridge Dental Centre, and we’ll be happy to help you schedule an appointment.
