Root canals have a bad reputation and can cause fear and extreme dental anxiety. But the truth is that once your tooth is numb, you’ll no longer have to worry about the toothache that kept you up at night or the inability to drink hot or cold beverages.
With today’s modern dental technology, combined with our team’s expertise, a root canal can be both comfortable and stress-free.
Let’s demystify this common dental procedure.
What Is a Root Canal?
Root canal treatment is a procedure designed to remove the infected pulp tissue from inside your tooth, often saving it from extraction.
If you have extensive decay or sustain an injury, it can lead to any of the following symptoms:
- Severe toothache
- Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold
- Swollen or red gums
- A bad taste in your mouth
- A bump or pimple on your gums
- Tooth discolouration
The Root Canal Procedure
Our dental team is committed to providing comfortable root canal therapy.
When you arrive at our office for your appointment, here’s what you can expect:
- First, we’ll completely numb your mouth so you won’t feel anything during the procedure.
- We’ll isolate the affected tooth with a small rubber sheet. This keeps it clean and dry.
- Next, we’ll access the infection by putting a small hole in the top of your tooth.
- Using special tools, we’ll remove the infected nerves and blood vessels.
- We’ll clean and disinfect the area before filling it with a rubbery substance, known as gutta-percha.
- For added protection, we’ll add a temporary filling to the top of your tooth.
- Later, you’ll come back to our office so we can place a permanent filling or dental crown to strengthen and protect your tooth.
- Before you leave, we’ll go over your care instructions and schedule your next appointment.
That’s it!
