Today, we're talking about the benefits of dental sealants. Dental sealants are a preventive treatment that I typically recommend for children. However, if you are an adult patient who is prone to tooth decay and cavities, I may recommend them for you, too. Here's what you should know about dental sealants.

What Is a Dental Sealant?

A sealant is a thin, plastic coating that I place over the chewing surface of your child's teeth, particularly the molars, which take the brunt of the chewing forces and do most of the heavy lifting of chewing. My team and I can apply sealants using a quick, non-invasive procedure that we can complete in a single appointment at our dental clinic. In most cases, we don't even need to use an anesthetic, so your child doesn't have to get numb for the procedure.

Who Is a Candidate for Dental Sealants in Maple Ridge, BC

The reason my colleagues and I typically recommend sealants for children is that their brushing skills and dexterity are not yet developed, and they are more prone to tooth decay and cavities, especially on their back molars, which are harder for them to reach. The sealants act as a barrier between the acids that break down enamel and cause tooth decay, and protect your child's teeth from decay.

Some adults who are particularly prone to tooth decay may also be good candidates for dental sealants.

Even better news, because sealants are considered preventive, many dental insurance companies will cover a portion of the treatment, meaning parents have minimal out-of-pocket costs to get sealants for their children. Our knowledgeable financial team can help you navigate your insurance benefits if you're considering dental sealants for yourself or your child.
