What should I do if my child has a dental emergency?

Dental emergencies can be scary, especially when they involve your child. But knowing how to respond can make a massive difference. At Meadow Ridge Dental Centre, we offer children’s dentistry in Maple Ridge and are here to help when urgent situations arise.

If your child experiences a dental emergency, such as a knocked-out tooth, chipped tooth, severe toothache or swelling, stay calm and please contact us immediately. Acting quickly can prevent further damage and relieve pain.

Here’s what to do in common dental emergencies:

  • Knocked-out tooth (adult tooth) — Rinse the tooth gently and try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, store it in milk or saliva and get to our clinic ASAP.
  • Toothache — Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. Avoid putting aspirin directly on the gums.
  • Chipped or broken tooth — Save any pieces, rinse the mouth and apply a cold compress.
  • Swelling or infection — This may indicate an abscess, which needs prompt treatment. Please call us right away.
