As with any surgical procedure, tooth extraction has risks. However, patients who follow our post-op instructions tend to have smooth recoveries after oral surgery. It's also a good idea to inform your dentist right away if you have any problems or concerns after tooth extraction.
Here are some situations in which you would want to contact your dentist after oral surgery:
- Excessive bleeding — It is normal to experience some bleeding in the first few days after tooth extraction. However, heavy bleeding that isn't subsiding is cause for concern.
- Pain, bruising, and swelling — These are all normal occurrences after oral surgery. Contact your dentist if they don't subside after a few days.
- Infection — If you experience an infection you may notice fever, chills, excessive swelling, and discharge in the extraction site. Contact your dentist right away.
- Nerve damage — Nerves may sometimes be impacted if they're close to the extraction area.
